CCTV in a car park: how to position cameras
In a car park cameras are expected to do two things: tell whose car drove in and show what happened to it. These are two different tasks.

Positioning
Five rules
- Entry and exitA camera at the gate or the barrier shows every vehicle.
- The plate — with a separate cameraFor a plate to be readable the camera is mounted low and aimed with a narrow angle at the spot where cars slow down. A general camera from above usually cannot make out the plate.
- RowsCameras along the rows show who scraped a car and who walked up to it.
- Pedestrian doorsThe side gates and doors through which people enter the car park.
- LightAt night headlights can dazzle the camera. Even lighting of the area helps, and so do cameras with a mode that suppresses bright light — many models have one.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is one camera enough for a small yard?
For an overview, possibly. But it will most likely not show the plate of a car driving in.
Is a barrier needed if there are cameras?
A camera shows who drove in. A barrier keeps outsiders out. They are usually installed together.
Who selects cameras for the site?
We do: we visit, inspect the site and select equipment for the task and budget. The visit and the estimate are free.
