Cards and fobs for access control: what types there are
An access card looks the same for everyone, but inside they differ. The type of card decides how easy it is to make a copy.

Types
What to know
- Simple cardsThe most affordable. They are not hard to copy: many key-cutting shops offer this. Not enough for serious protection.
- Protected cardsThe data in them is encrypted and copying is much harder. The reader must support this type of card.
- Card, fob or wristbandThe insides are usually the same; the shape differs. A fob is handy on a key ring, a wristband where hands are busy.
- A phone instead of a cardSome systems let people in by phone. This is clarified when terminals are selected.
- If a card is lostIt is removed from the system and stops opening doors. The member of staff is given a new one.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can you do without cards altogether?
Yes. A face recognition terminal lets people in without a card: there is nothing to lose or hand over.
Will old cards work with new readers?
Not always: the card type and the reader type must match. This is checked before buying.
Who selects the cards and readers?
We do: we look at what is already installed on site and select compatible equipment. The visit and the estimate are free.
