Cable for CCTV: which one to choose
Cable is hidden in walls and forgotten for years. That is why saving on it is the worst idea in the whole system.

Choosing
Five questions
- Twisted pair or coaxialIP cameras are usually connected with twisted pair, analogue ones most often with coaxial cable. The cable is chosen to suit the system type.
- Copper or copper-clad aluminiumCopper-clad aluminium is cheaper but conducts worse and breaks more easily. For powering cameras over the cable on long runs, copper is used.
- Outdoor cableOutdoors you need cable in a jacket that sun and moisture do not break down. Ordinary indoor cable cracks there quickly.
- Run lengthThe usual length of one twisted-pair run is up to 100 metres. Beyond that an intermediate switch is added or other solutions are used.
- How to lay itIn trunking, conduit or above the ceiling, without sharp bends and away from power cables.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can old cable be reused?
If it is in good condition and the right type, yes. It is tested before the cameras go up.
Why does the picture drop out in the rain?
Most often water has got into an outdoor connection. Connectors are hidden in a sealed junction box.
Who lays the cable?
We do: we lay the cable during installation. We work neatly — the cable is hidden and no wires hang loose.
