How many days a CCTV archive lasts
The same disk can hold a week of footage or two months. It all depends on five things.

What it depends on
Five factors
- Number of camerasAll cameras record to a shared disk. Twice as many cameras means an archive roughly half as long.
- ResolutionThe sharper the picture, the more space each minute of footage takes.
- CompressionThe modern H.265 compression takes noticeably less space than the earlier H.264 at the same quality.
- Continuous or on motionRecording only when there is motion in the frame saves disk space where nothing happens for long: a warehouse at night, an office at the weekend.
- Disk sizeA larger disk or several disks means a longer archive.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What happens when the disk is full?
The recorder keeps working and writes new footage over the oldest.
How can I extend the archive without buying a disk?
Switch on motion recording on cameras where it makes sense and make sure the cameras record in H.265.
Will an ordinary computer disk do?
Disks designed for round-the-clock recording are made for recorders. It is better to use those.
Who will work out the size needed?
We work it out when selecting equipment — from the number of cameras and how many days of footage you need.
