How to choose a video recorder for CCTV
A recorder takes the picture from the cameras, writes it to disk and shows it on a monitor and a phone. It is chosen to suit the cameras, not the other way round.

Choosing
Five questions before buying
- Which camerasIP cameras need a network recorder (NVR), analogue cameras need their own (DVR).
- How many channelsOne channel is one camera. Take a reserve: for four cameras an eight-channel recorder is handier, so more can be added later.
- How many disksHow many days the archive lasts depends on the number and size of disks. Small recorders have one disk bay, large ones several.
- Are there PoE portsA recorder with built-in PoE ports powers the cameras itself — a small system needs no separate switch.
- What resolution it recordsThe recorder must support the resolution of your cameras, otherwise the recording will be worse than they can deliver.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can I do without a recorder?
One or two cameras can record to a memory card. For a system of several cameras a recorder is handier and more reliable.
Where should the recorder be placed?
In a closed place that outsiders cannot reach: if it is carried off, the footage goes with it.
What recorder does a large site need?
For hundreds of cameras storage servers are used. A shop or an office is fine with a smaller recorder.
