Four types of turnstile
- TripodThree rotating arms. Compact and the most affordable, lets people through one at a time. The usual choice for a staff entrance.
- Speed gateGlass wings that part in front of the person. Passage is faster and wider and it looks neat — for offices and business centres.
- Full-heightBlocks the passage to its full height and cannot be climbed over. Used outdoors and where there is no guard.
- Swing gateA wide passage beside the turnstiles: for goods, pushchairs and wheelchair users.
- What controls itA turnstile opens on a signal from an access control terminal: by card or by face.

How many turnstiles are needed?
It is counted from the number of people at peak hour, so that no queue builds up at the entrance in the morning.
What happens in a fire?
Turnstiles are wired so that the passage opens on an alarm. Many models have a free-passage mode for this.
