A local network for an office: what it consists of

Internet, printers, cameras, phones and Wi-Fi in an office all rest on one cable network. It is easier to do it right once than to fix it for years.

Structure

Five parts of an office network

  • Cables to desksA cable runs from every desk to one point. It is laid before the final finish.
  • Sockets with a reserveA desk usually gets more than one socket: computer, phone, printer. Adding a socket later means cutting into the walls again or running the cable in trunking.
  • A cabinetAll cables meet in a network cabinet. It holds the switches, the router, the recorder and the UPS.
  • SwitchesThey connect all devices to each other. The number of ports is chosen with room to grow.
  • Wi-Fi access pointsEven coverage comes from several access points placed to a plan, not from one powerful router in a corner.
Questions

Frequently asked questions

When should the network be done — before or after the fit-out?

Before the final finish: the cable is hidden in walls, trunking and above the ceiling.

Why label cables and sockets?

So that a year later the right line is found in a minute instead of testing every one.

Do you build networks?

Yes: structured cabling, cabinet assembly, Wi-Fi coverage, switching and equipment set-up.
